“Last Week Tonight”: John Oliver jokes about why OJ Simpson isn’t in the musical “Sweeney Todd.”

John Oliver started talking politics again Last week tonight and took a swipe at OJ Simpson.

While discussing US Senator Bob Menendez and his wife Nadine Arslanian, Oliver showed a clip of him proposing to Arslanian in front of the Taj Mahal. Menendez serenaded Arslanian with a musical number The greatest showman.

Menendez sang “Never Enough,” whose lyrics say that “towers of gold will never be enough,” prompting Oliver to tell Simpson.

“It doesn’t look good to hear the world’s oldest theater boy singing that ‘gold towers will never be enough’ for him, considering how many gold bars were found in his house,” said Oliver. “I don’t care how much you love a song. If it sounds like a confession, maybe you shouldn’t sing it in public.”

Oliver then joked: “That’s one of the many reasons why Sweeney Todd Revival on Broadway starring Josh Groban and not OJ Simpson because no matter how good the role may be, the knife crime on stage will not be the knife crime I would think of.

The Sweeney Todd Revival on Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater with Groban alongside Annaleigh Ashford, Jordan Fisher, Maria Bilbao, Jamie Jackson, Gaten Matarazzo, John Rapson, Ruthie Ann Miles and Nicholas Christopher.
