Pandemics aside, There is only one thing that can paralyze Madrid: extreme weather conditions. What falls the Universal Flood? The streets of the capital turn into an improvised mini-Venice. What is a heat wave? Madrid residents go into low-power mode, go into hibernation and only leave the house when there is no sun. Which snow? The city comes to a complete standstill. The latter is not usually common, but on January 7, 2021, we were lucky (or unlucky, depending on how we spent those days) to experience a historic snowfall.
Surely many of us will remember how timidly snowflakes began to fall that Thursday in January. A snowfall so light that the expression “nothing, if I’m sure it won’t work“was one of the most repeated that day. Nothing could be further from the truth, as we could only verify the next day. In less than 24 hours, we began to see hundreds of cars stuck in the snow, trains stopped running and the airport shut down with its activity: Filomena had arrived in town.
Since that day and looking back, preferably with the help of the newspaper library, the hilarious moments seemed to keep happening: people ski through the streets from Madrid as if it were the Pyrenees, some even on dog sleds, snowmen In every corner, each better than the last, snowball fights in the middle of the Puerta del Sol… Madrid became a new city which has completely stolen the hearts of all its inhabitants. Those who did not play in the snow with friends, did go for a walk. Those who could not do it due to mobility or health problems admired it from the window: all of Madrid was hymnized with snow.
If you a to remind quickly here we leave you the best pictures of Madrid in Filomena or part of the looks like of the well-known ones for Filomena, for example. A snowfall that undoubtedly marked a before and after in the city that we practically all remember fondly. Of course, except for the most adept at snow who were perfectly equipped, the rest of us mortals got pretty caught off guard. And although we saved the unforeseen as much as possible, today we clearly know what we need when the (second) snowfall of the century falls. here they go our nine essentials that we always have at home from Filomenathat you never know:
