THE FLASH Star Grant Gustin Reveals Abandoned Plans for Series Finale: ‘It Was Heartbreaking’

After nine lightning seasons, The Flash ended in an emotional way last year. Fans saw Barry Allen and Team Flash defeat Cobalt Blue and a host of resurrected speedster villains, including Eobard Thawne, Zoom, Savitar, and Godspeed.

It was a solid finale to The CW’s longest-running Arrowverse series, but second Grant Gustinthe ending we saw wasn’t exactly the one originally intended.

During a recent appearance at SpaceCon 2025 alongside Candice Patton (Iris West), Gustin explained how the ending had to be rewritten due to a COVID outbreak right before filming wrapped.

“We had to change parts of that script. It was two years into COVID and I hadn’t gotten it. And I got COVID a week and a half before it ended. I kept testing positive and couldn’t go back to work.”

He went on to explain:

“They closed for a day or two and reworked some parts. I missed at least three or four days of filming.”

One of the biggest casualties of those rewrites was a major moment involving Savitar. In the original version of the finale, Gustin was supposed to physically portray his Season 3 doppelgänger in a sequence featuring a big bad.

“I should have been in the scene with the prosthetic scar and the makeup, with all the bad guys, when Savitar was there in the costume. It had to be [Gustin] as Savitar. Other things happened too, my stunt double took some things, we walked around him.

Fans never saw Gustin’s return as Savitar, which makes the ending a little bittersweet in hindsight. Yet, despite the production setbacks, The Flash managed to craft an ending that honored Barry’s legacy, culminating in the Speed Force choosing new heroes like Avery Ho, Max Mercury, and Jess Chambers to carry on the torch.

But for Gustin, his last day as The Flash it didn’t end with a great team moment or a heartfelt goodbye surrounded by the cast. It was something much quieter and much more solitary.

“My last day of work was alone on a green screen, which felt right, like it was a little heartbreaking. I also spent so much time in a suit on a green screen, not talking to anyone!”

“It just felt right, and the last shot I shot was the last shot of the series, Barry running and pushing him, looking satisfied, and it was a great last shot to get.”

That image of Barry running one last time, satisfied but alone, seems like an apt metaphor for the end of the show. After nearly a decade of stories, sprinters and emotional arcs, The Flash ended its run during a time when many CW superhero shows were popular Batwoman AND Legends of tomorrow they were fired.

It’s been over a year since Gusting played Barry Allen, but fans haven’t stopped wondering if he might one day return to the DC Universe. Co-CEO of DC Studios James Gunn he said he would be open to casting Gustin again, but not necessarily as The Flash.
