They are always there to ruin the party. On Saturday 13 April, the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFFF) presented its world premiere Love lies bleeding. But during the screening of this lesbian film by Rose Glass starring Kristen Stewart and Katy M. O’Brian, lesbian-phobic viewers unleashed their violence, increasing the number of homophobic and discriminatory comments and actions.
Applause at the rape scene
Highly anticipated by the public, the Brussels premiere of this romantic thriller was the opportunity for queer people to come together to discover it together on 13 April. But according to several spectators present, the session was stormed by an audience of homophobic men, who came to disturb the session. As reported by the Belgian media Le Soir, one of the spectators recounted chilling facts on social media. She says :
“In every frame, (male) voices shouted chilling and dirty comments that were unfunny at best. The audience applauded a rape scene, the room laughed as a man shouted “she likes that dick” as the lesbians kissed on screen ; the room erupted in screams of disgust, as lesbians fucked on screen. (…) The room was screaming “shut up, bitch” when we asked for silence. Shots were fired, we got separated or we screamed or hit ourselves too. And then we got up and broke. »

Forced to leave the room
Second Varietymore than 60 queer women were forced to do so leave the room, after homophobic viewers tirelessly disrupted the screening. At least that’s what the BIFFF organizers report three cases of physical violence. A spectator testified in the columns of the American media:
“We were scared for our lives because people who say these things during a movie screening they are the same ones who attack us. We were scared and had to go out. »
The film’s distributor cancels its collaboration with the festival
Faced with the inertia of the festival during the screening of the film, Researchersthe distributor of the film canceled all these films at BIFFF this year and declared themselves “ shocked and disappointed »from these events. In their press release, this independent and progressive distributor has explained:
“ Until the film festival takes appropriate and decisive action to ensure the viewing of films in a safe and respectful mannerwe we will no longer cooperate with him in the future. »
In response, the Brussels festival stated that the clashes that occurred during the session “ they are unacceptable and do not in any way reflect the libertarian spirit of the festival “.
