For us Valentine’s Day will be placed under the sign of Afrofeminism, poetry and sororities. Feminist magazine that talks about the world from the richness of female points of view, Gaze organizes the screening of one of the greatest films of recent years, Atlantique by Mati Diop. As this meeting approaches, Clarence Edgard-Rosa spoke to us about his guest and this film burning with love and ghosts.

This is a heartbreaking story of love, fire and zombies which we promise will live with you for a long time. On the evening of February 14th the women’s and feminist magazine Gauze and the broadcast of the Afrofeminist poet Kiyémis Atlantica film that slips between cold and heat the current in the ocean.

Atlantic, sensual and decolonial masterpiece

We owe this sublime first film released in 2019 to the French-Senegalese director Mati Diop. The plot transports us to a popular suburb of Dakar, where the workers of a construction site, without pay for months, decide to leave the country by the ocean for a better future. Among them is Souleiman, who leaves the person he loves, Ada, promised to another man. A few days after the boys left for the sea, a fire devastates Ada’s wedding party and mysterious fevers strike the neighborhood girls. Issa, a young police officer, tries to carry out an investigation…

Showing ghosts and fire that govern the invisible world around us, Mati Diop makes us experience the incredible violence of colonialism and its contemporary nuances. In Atlanticthe splendor of green neon lights In a tragically emptied nightcluba shirt unusually drenched in sweata secret hug before saying goodbye tell the absurdity of capitalism AND patriarchy that, however powerful they may be, they can do nothing against the anger of their dead, especially when they are in love. What emerges is a film of mastery surprising, from which it nevertheless emanates an emotional, sensual and mystical charge that we experience until in his body. Atlantic It’s a film you never forget.

The meeting between a film, a director and a woman

All year round, the magazine Gauze meets his readers at the Gaité Lyrique cinema. More than the projection of a film about womenthis film club is a meeting place between the feminist public AND a guest, chosen by the magazine team. The target? Discover the works of female directors who it changed the lives of these guests. Clarence Edgard-Rosa, editorial director of Gauze he explained to us discussion that follows each projection:

“This is not an in-depth conversation about cinema and I’m not trying to turn my guest into a film critic. On the contrary, with her we rather extend the themes of the film agreed to establish a connection with her, her journey, her work. It’s another way to discover the film but also a new way to meet our guest.

“We have chosen this date strongly charged with symbols to talk about love in a different way. The Afrofeminist poet Kiyémis, whom we adore and who has just published her first novel Et, reflorir, has chosen a sublime and mystical film that tells of a disappearance. There is also talk of Atlantique by Mati Diop ghosts, of what he leaves behind, themes dear to Kiyémis. »
