It seems like Prime Video’s wild and bloody superhero universe just got a little smaller. Despite scoring an impressive 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, Eric Kripkethe animated anthology series by The boys present: Diabolico it was officially canceled after just one season.
Reports of the show’s quiet end surfaced earlier this month, but fans of The boys I’m not exactly mourning the loss. While live-action series and spin-offs are popular Gen V continue to dominate the conversation, Diabolical it didn’t leave the same impact.
The series premiered in 2022, offering a collection of bizarre and over-the-top animated shorts inspired by The boys universe. Each episode was written and animated in a different style, with input from creators like Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, Ilana Glazer, AwkwafinaAND Andy Samberg.
Also included is the voice cast Anthony Starr, Dominique McElligott, Colby Minifié, Chace Crawford, Elizabeth ShueAND Giancarlo Esposito.
Speaking to Collider, Kripke confirmed the news saying:
“I don’t think there will be a second season of Diabolical, although it’s not for lack of effort on our part. I think in the end the viewership wasn’t enough to justify a second season, unfortunately.
“However, we love him and Simon [Racioppa]the showrunner, would be willing to do it, but we haven’t been able to get permission yet.”
While critics praised Diabolical for its creativity and brutal humor, fan reaction was… muted. Many long-time followers of The boys Universe admitted that the show didn’t leave much of an impression.
“I forgot this existed until I read this,” one fan wrote on r/TheBoys.
“If a show is streaming in the background while doing chores, has it ever been streamed,” another joked.
“It doesn’t help, it’s mostly an animation anthology where 50% of it has nothing to do with the TV series it’s marketed as a companion to,” someone else said.
Others have compared the series to Star Wars: Visions for its disjointed narrative and experimental tone.
“Diabolical it was great, but it doesn’t really follow the same rules as The boys OR Generation V,” explained one fan. “It’s like Visions of Star Wars. Roughly inspired by tradition, the show interprets the source material differently. It’s a lot of unique stories, I really enjoyed it, but it’s not for everyone.
Some viewers admitted that they only checked it out after watching it Gen Vbut I didn’t feel obligated to stay:
“After seeing Gen V season 1, I went back to watch Diabolical – I had already started it but I abandoned it almost immediately. It was fine. It’s worth watching if you’re in a The boys mood, but you looked at everything else. But it’s definitely the most skippable thing of all.”
So while The boys present: Diabolico may have been adored by critics, it seems audiences weren’t interested in returning for more animated mayhem.
Luckily there are still plenty of them The boys content coming soon. The boys The fifth season does not yet have a release date, but only spin-offs The boys: Mexico AND Vought on the rise are in development at Prime Video.
