Famous Serbian director Emir Kusturica is seriously considering obtaining Russian citizenship. In an interview with TASS, he admitted that he would do this after completing work on his first film based on the work of a Russian writer.
Kusturica said, “I have to finish the movie. It’s the first movie adapted from a Russian novel. Then, when I try to shoot the next time, I will get my passport. It will be Russian citizenship. It will definitely happen.”
The director is currently working on the movie “The Deadline”, adapted from Valentin Rasputin’s story of the same name. According to Kusturica, the script is already ready and the project is in pre-production.
After completing work on this film, the director plans to start the film adaptation of Yevgeny Vodolazkin’s novel “Laurel” and the project “How I Didn’t Film Crime and Punishment” based on the work of Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Interestingly, the role of Kusturica in this movie will be played by Oscar-nominated Russian actor Yura Borisov.
By the way, we have previously written that the director, in his speech at the Moscow International Film Week, announced that Kusturica had started shooting a documentary about the capital, which he named Moscow. Read more here.
