In a sometimes controversial interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier, Liz Cheney once addressed the network’s viewers with the message: “Don’t vote for Donald Trump.”
“We can pursue conservative policies without burning the Constitution,” Cheney said. “And so I want to encourage the people who are going to watch and vote today in these caucuses and primaries to vote for someone else. Don’t vote for someone who has already tried to seize power.”
Because of her criticism of Trump and her warnings about a second term, Cheney is now a pariah from the Republican Party and has made several appearances in other media outlets to promote her book. “It’s not about me,” Baier said.
“That’s correct. But it’s a very important concept. Every president, Republican or Democrat, since George Washington has ensured a peaceful transfer of power. Donald Trump tried to seize power.”
“This is not about politics. I voted for Donald Trump 93% of the time. It is about the nation. It is about the Republic. It’s about the Constitution.”
Cheney, who once worked for Fox News, also appeared to address the Fox News staff and called out one of the late conservative commentators. “I come here to Fox and sit in Charles Krauthammer’s green room, and I know how honored Charles was by you and me,” she said. “And Charles taught us many things. But one of them is that some things must matter, and that rising above politics, transcending partisanship and recognizing our duty to the Constitution is the most conservative of conservative principles.”
