‘Tech neck’ becomes a new problem for young people

Modern devices keep us connected, but podiatrists are sounding the alarm about the growing problem of “tech neck.” Experts warn that tilting your head for long periods of time while using a smartphone can lead to premature spinal degeneration and chronic pain, especially among young people.

According to United Press International, “technical neck” develops when users keep their heads down for long periods of time while scrolling or typing messages. This places excessive stress on the cervical spine and muscles, sometimes leading to hyperextension of the upper cervical spine and flexion of the lower cervical spine. In addition to neck pain, headaches and problems with chewing function often occur.

Recent research published in the International Journal of Environmental Sciences has shown that students using smartphones exhibit significant problems with posture and shoulder mobility. Professor James Harrop from Thomas Jefferson University states that for every centimeter of head tilt forward, approximately 4.5 kg of load is placed on the neck muscles and spine. When tilted at 60 degrees, the pressure force reaches 27 kilograms.

A review by the European Spine Journal calls “technical neck” the “silent epidemic reshaping our spine.” Researchers warn that children and teenagers are particularly vulnerable because their spines are still developing. Problems associated with persistent head tilt can include herniated discs, osteoarthritis, and spondylolisthesis.

The National Spine Foundation recommends preventative measures like keeping devices at eye level, setting timers for regular breaks, maintaining good back alignment, and strengthening your neck and core muscles. Lindsay Orosz, director of the foundation, emphasizes the importance of the habit of placing at least four fingers between your chin and chest.
