“Chewing Gum” wins top prize at Taiwan’s Golden Horse Project Market

Taiwan’s Golden Horse Film Project Promotion (FPP) has completed Lee Yi-shan’s first film chewing gum Win the grand prize, which includes a cash prize of US$32,000 (1 million TWD).

The project is about a young boxer from the lower lower communities who redefines herself through the struggles of her spiritual journey.

The award was presented by a three-member jury consisting of Taiwanese actor and director Chen Yi-wen; Taipei-based, Hong Kong-born producer Jeffrey Chan (Eye of the storm, the pig, the snake and the dove) and Hong Kong producer and distributor Winnie Tsang (The way we dance, Far away).

The three jurors were full of praise chewing gum for its “beautiful character portrayals, including their relationships, attitudes and various aspects of their lives, which feel absurd but also very real.”

Golden Horse FPP has separate sections for development features, work in progress and development series. In the series portion, Netflix awarded the Emerging Storyteller Award to Calendar Studios.
