EXCLUSIVE: Vanessa Kirby and Lauren Dark have joined as executive producers for the Swiss Oscar entry Thunder by writer and director Carmen Jacquier. Kirby & Dark’s Aluna Entertainment will support the film’s awards in the race for Best International Film.
Founded in 1900, Thunder Lilith Grassmug plays 17-year-old Elisabeth, who is called back to her mountain village after the sudden death of her older sister. After five years in a convent, Elisabeth returns to help on her family farm, but is suffocated by the town’s stifling rules and the silence surrounding her sister’s death – driving her to fight for her right to live and love have to experience, rebelling against the strict expectations of society.
“From the moment we saw it Thunder At the Marrakech Film Festival, we were overwhelmed by Carmen’s stunning debut, marking the arrival of an exciting new voice in cinema,” said Kirby and Dark. “Carmen’s film work is both bold and lyrical and we couldn’t be prouder to promote her as a profound new talent.”
Jaquier said: “I have admired Vanessa Kirby for a long time and am very excited that she and Lauren Dark have joined her. Thunder. The goal of this film is to inspire a more just world: a world where women are free from violence and allow themselves the right to experience their bodies and spirituality in any way they want. It gives me strength to have Vanessa and Lauren with me on this mission.”
Thunder celebrated its world premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, the European premiere in San Sebastián, and then screened in Zurich, Rome, Thessaloniki and other countries, winning more than a dozen awards. Jaquier received the Women in Motion’s Emerging Talent Award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival after Thunder won the Swiss Film Prize twice.
Decanalogue sold Thunder in the US, where it opened the IFC Center in New York on October 25 and will expand to Los Angeles on November 10. “Thunder” was written and directed by Jaquier and produced by Flavia Zanon and Joëlle Bertossa of Close Up Films.
