The glittering recap of Drag Race, ep 8: a moving and spectacular semi-final

Find every Monday on Madmoizelle the recap of season 2 of Drag Race France! This week, the Queens have to go through a perilous makeover to reach the finals.

Previously on : the eliminated queens returned to challenge the queens still in the competition, and that’s it Piche who created the surprise find his place, to the detriment of Cookie Kunty. This twist leaves the queens perplexed. For Sarah forever, “Cookie didn’t deserve a start like this”. For her part, Piche intends to give everything to snatch a place in the final!

Mini challenge : it’s a parody of the cult game show “The Weak Link”. Draguisé, here he became “The weak heel”, enlivened by our favorite Toulouse sausage, Lova Ladiva ! The season 1 queen put on her best glasses to step into the role of the relentless Laurence/Lova Boccolini. The queens have five minutes (WTF?!) to transform into drag and join the reconstituted TV.

The questions are a clever mix of everything and season 1 references, we love this version of the weakest link! They range from Lorie’s repertoire to the themes of the first season’s fashion shows (big up to Sara, who had the hat-trick in the canteen on La nuit des 1000 Mylène,), to “things 20cm long” passing through “films where Marion Cotillard does not die”… And against all odds, Mami Watta, our cagole that has it in the ciboulot, wins the challenge !

From rugby player to drag queen

Big challenge : Fans of the Drag Race franchise won’t be surprised to see the makeover challenge coming! In this event, the queens have to transform into drag people who know nothing about this universe. In the final result, we must distinguish a familial resemblance between the queen and her mate. And in this episode, the queens aren’t at the end of the sentence sincethey have to turn stocky, bearded rugby players into drag queens ! Strengthened by her last victory, Mami Watta has the power to choose the distribution of duets and does it very correctly. “Every day I was like, I’m going to sabotage them. But today I’m not in the mood for sabotage” confides the queen in a generous and playful mood with the French language!

He allies with Brice, gives Rayanne to Piche, François to Sara Forever, Ludovic to Keiona and Florent to Punani. As for the guests of the week, choreographer Nicolas Huchardwhich has already arrived in season 1, is back, alongside singer La Zarra (Eurovision fans know that)!

In the workshop, the rugby players meet the queens and realize that almost all of them (except Piche’s partner!) say goodbye to their beards. Mami Watta announces the color to Brice: “I’m here whore of the group, so we won’t be very dressed up!”. These moments of exchange prove it you can be an open-minded heterosexual and cisgender man and that gives some hope! François explains to Sara Forever that she wants to show her two children, “what it means to be inclusive, what it means to accept”. The rugby player is also eager to take up this personal challenge and discover another side of himself. Sara is very moved by François’ words.

For her part, Keiona announces terrible news to Ludovic: “she will leave” (his beard)! Rayanne explains to Piche that he was seduced by this transformation proposal because he always wanted to “fighting a form of extreme masculinity”. The athlete thinks we have “a whole part of femininity in us” and it’s time to take it! We love these big hearted rugby players.

Gypsy community and homosexuality

Punani is happy to realize that Florent does quite well in high heels, which is not the case for all rugby players! It’s a great moment, between fun and movement, to see these athletes learn the approach to the parade. Meanwhile, Keiona is still struggling with her partner’s hair: “I mow and it never ends. She has so much hair!”. Rugby players rediscover their jaw after shaving or trimming. Brice confesses a terrible secret to Mami Watta: she has never seen a makeup tutorial. Our drag queen is shocked and we understand.

Piche explains that he is very moved to see the dads achieve this challenge. She was outraged by her boyfriend, who revealed his homosexuality to his mother’s mother. LGBTQ+ people live in the gypsy community”hidden“, he explains. Piche’s mother told his father, and he was kicked out of the house at 13. “No one can imagine what it feels like to be forced out of the house at 13. You must have really lived it” Sara explains. Piche breaks down in tears and explains that he wants to prove that whatever culture you’re from, it’s possible to be anyone you want. “I will never apologize for being myself”. Heart to Piche and to all people facing intolerance in their families.

Rugby players discover their faces in disguise and can’t believe it! They are delighted with the result. “I’m so beautiful!” throws Rayanne at Piche. It’s so sweet to see them living their best life in drag. Now it’s time to perform in front of the Drag Race jury! Nicky Doll’s look will delight gamers tonight. The presenter introduces herself in drag version of the character of Edea in Final Fantasy, his favorite video game. She is magnificent!

“Make over and beautiful match” fashion show: Piche and Visterabiche parade drag version of Anastasie and Javotte, Cinderella’s wicked sisters. They compete for the famous glass slipper, in pastel dresses and feathered hats. Mami Watta and Queen Mera parade first as tired grannies, before revealing their talent for dominatrix, all dressed in leather! Punani and Lovali opted for a total look of very 80s jeans and brooches (Punani’s favorite decade, of course!) and blue wigs. They are super cute.

Keiona and Lola go to their first dance, in a purple sheath dress, cute but a little simple. In ballroom culture, there is a “first time” category for beginners. This is what Keoona wanted to tell with this fashion show. Sara Forever and Divina Forever pay homage to the British cult series Absolutely fabulous and its mythical characters, Edina and Patsy. Their runway is super fun.

Jury verdict : All couples receive a shower of compliments, but also some criticism. A loose corset for Piche, a little stretch dress for Punani, a lack of detail on Keiona’s dress… It was the duo formed by Sara Forever and Florent who delivered the most complete performance. And logically, it’s Sara who wins the challenge of the week, and her fourth victory of the competition! Goes to the final, soon joined by Keiona and Mami Watta.

The lip sync between Piche and Punani on Mécano’s fabulous title, “A woman with a woman”. The two queens bare their hearts in this ballad of lesbian love. And its Punani who wins the lip-sync thanks to his moving interpretation. Piche has to quit Drag Race – again! – But she is very happy that she was able to demonstrate so much. “I just had the most amazing adventure of my life”, concludes.

Who, who, who will be the queen?

The dilemma is impossible, I don’t know about you, but I love them all! Given their careers in the competition, Keiona and Sara Forever start as favourites, but we are not immune to a twist. At that time, you are more team Keiona, Punani, Sara Forever or Mami Watta ? See you next week for the grand finale!
