Midwifery training reform is (finally) adopted!

The reform was unanimously adopted by the National Assembly on Monday 16 January 2023. It will make it possible to integrate midwifery training into universities, as well as create a one-year postgraduate course.

This is a big step forward for future midwives. Yesterday a bill was unanimously approved to reform the training of midwives and hopefully give the profession more recognition.

Studies to become a midwife are changing

Many are those (and those) who rejoice at this vote. The text of the law provides, by 2027, to fully integrate the training of midwives within universities, starting from 1 September 2027. The goal? Homogenize the level of training e “decompartmentalization of health education”according to the text, mainly through training and research units (UFR) in medicine or healthcare.

Furthermore, an extra sixth year of study is also planned, compared to the current five, to lighten the current teaching program, considered too heavy and intense, in terms of the proposed workload.

Finally, this voted text also promises a better recognition of the profession, considering their activity as a real medical profession and not only “paramedic”.

After years of waiting and toiling by this profession, midwives are starting to win their case. Even if the positions on the board of directors are still present, such as the lack of salary increases.
