Warner TV is looking for a new French home after failed talks to renew its exclusive deal with Canal+

Canal+ pulled out of Warner TV after the French pay-TV giant and the channel’s parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery France, did not agree on new terms.

The channel, which was available exclusively through various Canal+ packages and its mobile app MyCanal, announced in a brief statement on Tuesday (10 January) that it was being taken off the air by Canal+.

“We regret that Warner TV is no longer available on Canal+ and MyCanal as there is no agreement between the two groups. Warner TV is not stopping and will soon be available again in metropolitan France.”

The channel noted that it remains available in many French overseas territories, as well as through other partnerships with other French-speaking viewers in territories such as Belgium and Switzerland.

The lull in conversation comes as Warner Bros. Discovery France continues to pave the way for the 2024 launch of HBO Max in the region in an operation that will secure individual local deals for top HBO shows.

French media reported earlier this month that there are around 60 HBO shows game of thrones, The sopranos and Chernobyl would be removed from the Orange Cinema Series (OCS) bouquet on January 1.

The news that Warner TV will no longer be available on Canal+ came just a day after its parent company Canal+ Group announced it had signed a letter of intent to acquire OCS and Orange.

The contract dispute also led to the removal of other Warner channels Cartoon Network, Boomerang, Boing, Toonami, TCM Cinéma and CNN from Canal+’s offering.

These channels are available on other platforms in France such as Orange, SFR or Molotov.tv and are less affected.

Warner’s Eurosport 360 will continue to be available on Canal+ as it is a separate deal

Warner TV attracts around 3.7 million monthly viewers in France (according to figures released by audience monitor Médiamétrie/Médiamat’Thématik in early 2022) with popular programs including Leverage: Salvation, The big bang theory, 2 flat bag girls and the original French show visitor.
