Somen “Steve” Banerjee was one of the most extravagant and famous businessmen of the 1980s in the United States. Of Indian origin and settled in the city of Los Angeles, he managed to build an entire empire thanks to his male stripper club, the Chippendales. A turbulent story of ascent and descent into hell that Disney+ adapts in its new series, “Welcome to Chippendales”. Released a few months ago in the United States, it has just seen the light of day in Spain.
“It’s a complicated story, so many things happen that it’s very unpredictable. There are big crimes and other amazing things”says Kumail Nanjiani, the actor who brings Banerjee to life, in an interview with eCartelera. “But what’s most interesting are the characters and these wonderful actors caught in that web of despair”he adds between laughter.
Joining him in the cast is Annaleigh Ashford, who plays Irene, Steve’s wife. “There’s more pressure when the audience gets to know the people you’re playing”underlines the actress, who has brought to life more than one real-life character in the past. “These are people the world doesn’t know and there isn’t much written about them either”Nanjiani qualifies, “This gave us more freedom”.

No dragons, but muscular guys
Upon its US premiere, ‘Welcome to Chippendales’ had to compete on the grid with series such as ‘The House of the Dragon’. That said, the performers took it with a lot of humour. “Which would you rather see, crazy or boring dragons?”says Nanjiani. “Those dragons are computer made”Ashford joins, “our men are real and neither are the torn pants on the computer”.
“Welcome to Chippendales” is now available on Disney+.
