After being trapped in development limbo, Disney’s live-action remake Tangled is returning to action. The project, which had The greatest showman director Michael Gracey attached last year, would be shelved following Snow White’s disappointing box office performance.
According to Deadline, Disney is ready to climb that tower once again, and this time, Scarlett Johansson she might join the cast as the scheming Mother Gothel.
The outlet revealed that the project was temporarily put on hold due to Snow Whitebut he explained that the difference in audience interest played a major role in its revival, noting that “there is a big difference in audience attraction to older Disney animated films receiving live action releases, compared to those titles following the musical renaissance of 1989’s The Little Mermaid.”
This logic makes sense when you look at Disney’s track record. While Snow White have struggled, Disney’s modern Renaissance-era live-action remakes as Aladdin, The Lion KingAND Beauty and the Beast everything skyrocketed at the box office. Also Lilo and Stitch managed to become the only film to make billions of dollars this year, proving that fans still love these updated versions of the latest classics.
The remake of Tangled will contain a screenplay by Jennifer Kaytin Robinsonand is expected to remain close to the 2010 animated film.
The original starred Mandy Moore like Rapunzel and Zechariah Levi as Flynn Rider, following the story of the lost princess trapped in a tower by Mother Gothel, who steals her hair’s magical power to preserve her youth.
No casting confirmations have been made yet for Rapunzel or Flynn, but Johansson’s potential as Gothel could be a big win for Disney. The actress has a strong relationship with the studio following her stint as Natasha Romanoff in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and her star power could give this adaptation some serious boost.
The original Tangled was a major success for Disney, grossing nearly $600 million worldwide and winning a Grammy for its hit song “I See the Light.” The film’s popularity has only grown since then, inspiring theme park attractions, merchandise, and a loyal fan base that’s still eager to discover more about the world of Rapunzel.
With Tangledof music, adventure and heartfelt storytelling, it’s easy to see why Disney wants to revisit it. While I don’t care for these remakes, it will appeal to a whole new generation of kids.
