Tron: Ares didn’t quite light up the grid like Disney hoped. The long-awaited sci-fi sequel stumbled in its opening weekend, earning just $60 million worldwide, which is a disappointing start for a top-rated blockbuster that brought Jeff Bridges back in the digital saddle. But in true Dude fashion, Bridges doesn’t stress about it.
When Entertainment Weekly asked him about the disappointing box office numbers, Bridges had a chill, almost Zen-like response that fits his laid-back personality perfectly.
“It’s not really up my alley. [Laughs] I really don’t know. It’s interesting, however, how films are received on opening weekend. I remember Heaven’s Gate being considered, you know, very disappointing or a flop, but nowadays it’s considered some kind of masterpiece.”
For context, Gate of Paradisethe 1980 western epic film directed by Michele Ciminowas a legendary Hollywood bomb that failed both critically and financially. But over time it has been reevaluated and celebrated as an ambitious and misunderstood classic. Bridges also opened up about how the film lives on in his personal life.
“My wife took some wonderful photographs while we were filming Heaven’s Gate, and here in Santa Barbara, her photographs are on display at the Tamsen Gallery, which is right next to the Arlington Theatre.
“And next month there’s a screening of Heaven’s Gate that everyone’s invited to. And it’s the director’s cut, you know, Michael Cimino – it’s going to be amazing. So it’s interesting how things can grow on you.”
Bridges concluded the conversation by taking on the role of one of his most iconic characters, the Dude of The Big Lebowskito offer a perspective that perfectly sums up his attitude towards criticism.
“Even as an individual, often, I didn’t like a movie. And then a couple of weeks or months later, I watch it again. I say, ‘What was I thinking?’ [Laughs] As the guy would say: ‘That’s just like your opinion, man.’”
Still, Tron: Ares is facing a difficult road ahead. Analysts predict that the film could lose around $132.7 million, putting the film’s future in doubt Tron franchising.
The film currently sits at 53% on Rotten Tomatoes, with many critics calling it elegant but soulless. But there are over 50% who like the movie, and I’m one of them! I liked it! Hell, it has an audience rating of 86%, and that’s what really matters.
Maybe the weather will be kind Tron: Ares in the same way it was so Gate of Paradise.
