After The evocation: last rites with a scare of nearly half a billion dollars worldwide, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema waste no time diving into the supernatural world that fans can’t seem to get enough of.
A brand new prequel is officially in the works, and it looks like the studio is targeting an interesting new director to bring it to life.
According to The Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit, New Line has greenlit the next one Evocation film after the monstrous success of Last riteswhich earned over $487 million globally. Emerging director Rodrigue Huart He is reportedly in talks to direct the upcoming prequel, which marks his first major studio feature.
Huart’s short film Transylvania won the Midnight Short Jury Award at SXSW 2024 and his other projects, Trigger AND Truepremiered at Fantasia 2024, showcasing its unique blend of found-footage terror and digital storytelling.
Earlier this year, Paramount Pictures picked up his script Suffer little childrena retelling of the 1976 Spanish horror film Who can kill a child?with Walter Hamada on board as producer.
Hamada, who has been deeply connected to The Conjuring Universe since the beginning, has played a huge role in shaping the franchise’s continued success. As an executive producer, he has been a part of every film in the series, so his continued collaboration with Huart could have helped bring the young director on board.
The evocation: last rites served as an emotional and supernatural farewell for Vera Farmiga AND Patrick Wilsonclosing the story of Ed and Lorraine Warren.
The film explored the infamous Smurl infestation and brought the Warrens’ story arc to a disturbing and, in my opinion, unsatisfying conclusion. With the chapter now closed, the next phase of the franchise looks set to explore new corners of the dark mythology.
If Huart accepted, this would mark the first Conjuring Universe film since then Annabelle returns home (2019) not directed by Chaves, which would be a welcome creative change as we see where Demon Universe goes next.
The real news: Short film director Rodrigue Huart is in talks to direct the prequel to THE CONJURING. This is a winning film for New Line, especially after LAST RITES grossed almost half a BILLION dollars ($487 million to be more precise).
