Disney resumes production on Tangled feature film

According to Deadline, Disney will take a new look at the film adaptation of “Tangled,” in which Scarlett Johansson competes for the role of Mother Gothel.

Disney suspended work on the project in April after the box office performance of the Snow White adaptation caused concern for the company. The original film, which grossed nearly $600 million worldwide in 2010, was about the story of a long-haired girl named Rapunzel who spent her entire life in a tower. But when an escaped thief finds her, she sees the world for the first time and discovers who she really is.

The Disney Live Action team continues to reimagine existing stories in a modern way. Live-action remakes such as The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and Lilo and Stitch have fared better at the box office. Lilo and Stitch is by far the highest-grossing animated film of 2025, grossing $1.03 billion worldwide.

Meanwhile, Scarlett Johansson’s feature film debut, Eleanor the Great, starring June Squibb, was recently released in Sony Pictures Classics theaters and received 94% positive reviews from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

It was previously known that “The Simpsons” would return to the cinema after 20 years.
