Kyle Richards, 54, is the kind of friend who helps a friend in need. After your friend, Morgan WadeWhen, at 29, she discovered she had tested positive for the RAD51D gene mutation, which increases the risk of breast cancer, she decided to undergo a preventative double mastectomy. Although Morgan had the support of her family, she was The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star who connected Morgan with the nonprofit Mission Plasticos, an organization that offers free reconstructive “surgical care.”
The TV personality spoke during a recent interview with PEOPLE, about the process of helping the country singer through tough times. Kyle noted that he got involved with the nonprofit after his mother, Kathleen Richardsshe died of breast cancer in 2002. “I’ve been involved with Mission Plasticos for years and really admire the work they do for women across the country,” Kyle told the magazine on Dec. 21.

“Breast cancer has affected my family, and I understand how difficult it can be to navigate the healthcare system, the procedures it can involve, and the emotional and physical ramifications it can have,” she continued. “When Morgan told me what she was dealing with health-wise, I knew Mission Plasticos would be an incredible resource.” Without financial help, a surgery like Morgan’s could cost around $100,000, according to the outlet.
Now, Morgan has opened up about the “process” of the surgery and shared what the “weirdest part” was for her. “Everything is gone. This was probably the strangest part for me. I thought I wouldn’t care, but when you look in the mirror, there’s a lot to understand,” explained the 29-year-old. “I’m still processing how different my body is in that regard. As hard as it is to look in the mirror in this moment… [the scars will] Heal yourself and everything will be fine. If you had asked me the next day, I would have said, “Fuck everyone.” Why the hell did I do that? But now he has helped me see things differently.”
The musician’s surgery and Kyle’s help come after rumors that the pair were romantically linked due to the 54-year-old’s marital problems with Maurizio Umansky. Despite the rumors online, Kyle clarified that they are simply best friends during a July interview Page six. “We are very good friends,” he told the reporter at the time. When asked if the online speculation was “just a rumor,” Kyle replied “yes.”
Most recently, Kyle went to Mexico on Dec. 21 and enjoyed a tropical vacation during her ex-husband’s trip to Aspen. The mother of four shared a photo of her in a bikini via Instagram Stories while her rumored ex skied with the YouTuber. Lele Pons, 27. Although Kyle and Mauricio are not legally divorced, they confirmed that they have had a “rough year.” The beloved Bravo duo have been married since 1996 and have three daughters.
