Filmmaker Andrew Haigh has been a critical darling since his breakthrough 2011 directorial debut weekend. Over the years, he has won dozens and dozens of awards from film festivals and critics for his filmography, which includes highly acclaimed films such as 45 years And Lean on Piet, the HBO series Search and more.
This trend continues in his latest film: we are all strangers which recently won the British Independent Film Awards and won Haigh as producer, director and writer. It was also nominated for Indie Spirit, Critics Choice and London Film Critics Awards and recently won the Los Angeles Film Critics Screenplay Award. He’s still looking for his first Oscar nomination, and many experts suspect this film, which premieres today on Searchlight, will be enough.
We are all strangers is based on a Japanese novel but had some important changes. It tells the story of a man (Andrew Scott) who lost his parents in a terrible accident and years later returns to his childhood home only to find that time has stood still and they still live there. Paul Mescal, Claire Foy and Jamie Bell round out an exceptional cast in this fascinating film that explores grief, love and life in unexpected ways.
Haigh joins me this week for this week’s edition of my Deadline video series Behind the lens to talk about why he wanted to tackle this story, the changes he felt were important, the casting, working in a big studio environment with Searchlight and his previous Disney films, and joining the company as ‘ an assistant editor on numerous Ridley films. Scott films included Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, And Heavenly Kingdom. He also shares his picks for favorite movies of all time, including one he calls the best comedy of all time.
