Every year as we enter the holiday season, for some reason, the Die Hard The Christmas movie debate is raised. People have very strong opinions about it, but the strongest opinion comes from Bruce Willis himself.
Actor John McClane once made this very clear Die Hard it’s not a Christmas movie. During his Comedy Central roast in 2018, he forcefully said, “Die Hard is not a Christmas movie! It’s a Bruce Willis movie! So, yippee-ki-yay all you motherfuckers and good night! “
When you watch him say it, you can see he has a really good point. At the same time, yes… Die Hard it’s a Christmas movie… a Christmas action movie with Bruce Willis. I’ve been watching it every year during the holidays for years!
Die Hard director John McTiernanhe previously talked about the film becoming a Christmas classic and explained that he actually based some of the film’s themes on the Christmas movie It’s a wonderful life:
Specifically, the Pottersville sequence. This is what happens when the evil banker gets to do what he wants in the community without George getting in the way to stop him. And it is the clearest demonstration and critique of runaway, unregulated cowboy capitalism that has ever been made in an American film. Then it was imagination, but now, if you go out to most parts of the country, it’s the life that people live.
So McClane is the George Bailey of Die Hard. She went on to say that when he first discussed making the film, the most important aspect to him was to make McClane a relatable working-class hero. He added:
Everyone, while working on the film, started to have, as I said, the idea of this film as an escape. And there was joy in that. Because we were all the scratchers on the side of the king’s tomb. We had changed the content. And that’s how Die Hard became… we didn’t intend for it to be a Christmas movie. But the joy that came from it is what made it into a Christmas movie. And that’s really the best I can tell you about it.
