Harrison Ford will not appear as Rick Deckard in the upcoming television series Blade Runner 2099, creator Silka Luisa has confirmed.
The decision marks a major narrative shift for the science fiction franchise, as the new Amazon Prime Video series aims to chart its own course 50 years after the events of the last feature film.

Speaking about the casting of the project, Luisa explained that she wanted to be transparent with viewers regarding the veteran actor's involvement. She said Ford does not appear in the series, adding that as a fan of Blade Runner herself she would want to know, leading her to be totally honest with the audience.
Ford originally played Deckard, a detective hunting rogue synthetic humans known as replicants, in the original 1982 film directed by Ridley Scott. He later reprised the role in the acclaimed 2049 sequel, serving as a central figure who helped consolidate the storyline across generations.
Showrunner confirms Deckard absence
Although Luisa kept her explanation brief without disclosing further narrative secrets, her confirmation reinforces that the television project is moving away from the theatrical releases. Blade Runner 2099 is set half a century after the previous film, a temporal gap that left few initial clues pointing toward Deckard returning to the screen.
The Blade Runner franchise, which began with Scott's adaptation of Philip K. Dick's science fiction novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, has long explored themes of artificial intelligence and identity. The new television installment expands this universe for Amazon Prime Video, the global subscription streaming platform operated by Amazon.
Replicant dominance and new characters
According to the series trailer, the social landscape of 2099 has undergone a dramatic transformation. Replicants have seized control of society, while human beings have been forced into the role of second-class citizens.
Within this altered social context, the show focuses on two main characters, Olwen and Cora. The pair work together in an effort to stop a hostile group of enemy replicants.
Separation from the films
The shifting power dynamic between humans and replicants serves as a central engine of change in the story. It remains unclear how much of the original films' specific plot points will be directly mentioned, but the absence of the legendary actor underscores that the production seeks to distinguish itself as much as possible from the cinema releases.
Blade Runner 2099 is expected to premiere on Prime Video on November 25.
