Dave Bautista will star as Kratos in Amazon Prime Video's live-action God of War television series, taking over the lead role from Ryan Hurst.

Hurst was forced to exit the high-profile adaptation after suffering a torn biceps during a stunt while filming. The injury required surgical intervention and an extended recovery period, causing a temporary shutdown of production while producers sought a replacement for one of television's most physically demanding roles.

Bautista's casting brings a major shift to the portrayal of the god of war. A former professional wrestler who rose to fame as a multi-time champion in WWE, Bautista possesses the physical stature required for the legendary character. His recent physical conditioning for his role in the upcoming fantasy film Highlander further aligns with the heavy athletic demands of playing Kratos.

The actor has previously collaborated with Amazon MGM Studios on the action comedy My Spy and the upcoming feature film The Wrecking Crew. Bautista built a prominent Hollywood filmography playing Drax the Destroyer in Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy franchise and Glossu Rabban in Dune: Part 2. His movie credits also include Denis Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049, the 2021 film Dune, and Rian Johnson's Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. Taking on Kratos represents one of the biggest acting challenges of his career as he steps into the role of PlayStation's iconic warrior.

Adaptation of the PlayStation video game

Amazon Prime Video is expanding its portfolio of video game adaptations with the live-action series, which is produced by Amazon MGM Studios alongside Sony Pictures Television. The show adapts Sony Interactive Entertainment's celebrated gaming franchise, which has generated more than $500 million in revenue for the company. Developed by Sony Santa Monica Studio, the God of War video game series initially launched in 2005 on the PlayStation 2 console before reinventing itself with its critically acclaimed 2018 entry set in Norse mythology.

The new series will adapt the Norse era of the games, centering its storyline on the complex relationship between Kratos and his young son, Atreus. Amazon confirmed that the production will remain faithful to the tone of the video games, maintaining the dark, epic, and emotional narrative style that established the franchise as a cornerstone of Sony's gaming division.

The first season will consist of 10 episodes, providing screen time to develop the duo's journey across the Nine Realms of Norse lore. Demonstrating strong corporate confidence in the adaptation, Amazon has already secured a second season renewal prior to the broadcast of the first season.

Production schedule and full cast

Veteran showrunner Ronald D. Moore, known for creating acclaimed television series such as Battlestar Galactica, Outlander, and For All Mankind, serves as creator of the series. Principal photography originally began in Vancouver in February, with the production team planning to shoot both the first and second seasons back-to-back.

Production came to a sudden halt following Hurst's stunt injury. With Bautista now officially cast as Kratos, filming is scheduled to resume this autumn in Vancouver, British Columbia, to complete both seasons.

The story follows Kratos and Atreus as they travel across dangerous realms to fulfill the final wish of Faye, Kratos' deceased wife and Atreus' mother, by scattering her ashes from the highest peak. Child actor Callum Vinson co-stars as Atreus.

The supporting cast features Mandy Patinkin as the Norse all-father Odin, Ed Skrein as the antagonist Baldur, and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as the thunder god Thor. Actors Teresa Palmer, Jeff Gulka, and Max Parker also hold key roles in the series ensemble.
