Donald Glover has signed on to produce and star in a new movie in the Spider-Man universe from Sony/Marvel about the villainous Hypno-Hustler that is in very early stages of development, Deadline can confirm.
Plot details for the as-yet-untitled film are under scrutiny and a director has not yet been confirmed. But we hear the script will be written by Eddie Murphy’s son, Myles Murphy.
One of Spider-Man’s lesser known villains, Hypno-Hustler, was introduced for the first time Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man #24 in 1978. Created by Bill Mantlo and Frank Springer, the character, also known as Antoine Delsoin, is known for leading a band called the Mercy Killers and robbing them with hypnotic equipment during his shows.
Often suggested for the role of Spider-Man by die-hard fans of the franchise, dating back to the 2012 Marc Webb film The Amazing Spider-Man — which eventually hired Andrew Garfield as webslinger — Glover’s previous involvement with the franchise includes voicing Disney XD’s Miles Morales aka Ultimate Spider-Man Ultimate Spider-Man and as Morales’ uncle Aaron Davis on the Tom Holland front Spider Man: Coming Home.
The multi-hyphen was recently completed Atlanta – the critically acclaimed comedy-drama series he created, wrote, directed, directed and starred in for FX – and subsequently in projects such as a Mr and Mrs Smith Series for Prime Video.
News about the Hypno Hustler film was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Glover is repped by WME and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole; Murphy of WME and Mosaic.
