Ice cube he’s trying to take back creative control Friday Warner Bros. film franchise Ice Cube has plans for the franchise that he would like to move forward with, but the studio is not making it easy for him and wants the rights to the franchise returned to him.
A fourth film in the series titled Last Friday it’s been in the works, but there hasn’t been any movement on it, which has been frustrating for Cube. The actor claims that development of Last Friday is being blocked by Warner Bros. He was recently a guest on Mike Tyson’s Hotboxin podcast and, during the show, he asked Warner Bros. to give him control of the Friday franchise so that can make the next installment. He said:
“I don’t know. Warner Bros. is weird right now. I don’t know what they’re doing. They don’t know what they’re doing. moment, or we’re going to keep trying to convince them that they have to let us control the film. It’s my film, but they’re in control of distribution.”
Ice Cube is also not a fan of the idea of paying for the right to the franchise:
They have to give it to me and they will make money. I’m not going to pay for my stuff, that’s stupid. They have to do the right thing, give it to us, let’s turn it into more money and make the fans happy.. We can do a lot with it.”
You know, more of these Friday the movies would make the fans happy, and if WB isn’t going to do anything about it, why hold it back? But, you know, there’s a lot of legal stuff with the contracts that Ice Cube signed when he made that first film and there’s a reason why WB is still in control of it because that’s what Cube initially agreed to. But if they’re not going to do anything with the franchise, why not let Cube take care of it?
Cube previously spoke about the difficulty of working with WB, saying, “I’m trying to get him out of Warner Bros. They don’t believe in culture, man.”
Cube wrote a couple more sequels for Friday that the studio turned down. When he explained why he said, “They were like, ‘Yo, we don’t want Craig and Day Day in jail,’ because Craig and Day Day went to jail for selling weed before it was legal.”
He went on to add, “That shit is hilarious. After they turned it down, they made all these movies about going to jail. Orange Is the New Black, Get Hard, so I was like, ‘Man, see, you all fucked me up. .'”
Cube’s second script was about “the youngsters in the hood arguing with the OGs in the hood, and Craig has to go back and crush it. Because Smokey’s [Tucker’s] son is the new Deebo [Tommy Lister Jr.]and he’s going crazy.”
Of that, Cube said WB “tripped over it. They fucked up, and then John Witherspoon [who played Craig’s father, Willie Jones] past, [Lister Jr.] past, [Ezal actor A.J. Johnson] past. There are many characters who would return to the neighborhood. They just messed it up.”
As you can see, Cube isn’t happy with Warner Bros. He’s pissed, but I’m sure he’ll get to make his next Friday movie one day. Meanwhile, he could always start something new and tell a new story with new characters! He should just do it!
