After several years of development and production, James Cameron’S Avatar: The Way of Water will finally be released this year! There are a lot of mixed reactions from fans about this sequel to the trailers, but I’m actually excited about what it will offer. It’s hard to bet against James Cameron, especially when it comes to sequels.
It has been quite a journey for Cameron and his team to make this film, mostly because of the technology used to make it. That technology didn’t even exist, so they spent a lot of time coming up with the technology they needed to make the movie. The technology includes new cameras capable of shooting underwater and a motion capture system capable of “collecting separate shots from above and below the water and integrating them into a unified virtual image; they needed new algorithms, new AI, to translate what Cameron shot into what you see. Wild!
As you can imagine, a lot of money has been invested in this technology and in the production of these films and Cameron describes his GQ sequel as “the worst business case in the history of cinema”.
The GQ profile goes over all the problems Cameron faced while developing this technology saying, “Nothing was going to work the first time Cameron and the production tried it. Or the second. Or usually the third. Wellington, New Zealand, where Cameron was finishing the film, showed me a single effects shot, numbered 405. “That means there were 405 versions of this before it got to me,” he said.Cameron worked on the movie since 2013; it was supposed to come out years ago. As of September, it still wasn’t done.”
From all those years of trial and error and scrapped concepts and experiments, the budget has ballooned to insane levels. When Cameron was asked by GQ how expensive the sequel’s budget was, he replied “Very fucked up” and went on to describe the film as “the worst business case in the history of cinema”.
Cameron goes on to say that the minimum profitability target for Avatar: The Way of Water it’s an epic level. He explained, “You have to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history. That’s your threshold. That’s your breakeven.”
Damn! Will she really be able to pull it off!? We’ll find out soon enough. As for the difficulties involved in developing a film like this, the director agrees. He said, “I like it tough. I am attracted to the difficult. Hard is a fucking magnet for me. I go straight to the difficult. And I think it probably goes back to this idea that there are a lot of smart, really gifted, really talented filmmakers out there who just can’t do the hard stuff. So that gives me a tactical edge to do something no one else has ever seen, because really gifted people don’t fucking want to do it.
The film is set more than a decade after the events of the first film,”Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri and their children), the troubles that haunt them, how much they do to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to survive and the tragedies they endure.
The film is the protagonist Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stefano LangCliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine ClementAnd Kate Winslet.
