Much earlier Dusk, Nosferatuand even Dracula, there was Carmilla, a vampire woman who fell in love with her female victims before making them a meal. Dark Horse and Berger Books are helping shed light on the character she helped inspire Bram StokerIs famous Dracula. Written by Amy Chu and designed by So Lee, Carmilla: The first vampire will bring the character in 1996 at the height of the HIV / AIDS epidemic. When LGBTQ + women are killed, it is up to an idealistic Chinese-American social worker to become a detective to help. Her search will lead her to Carmilla’s, a mysterious new nightclub in the heart of Manhattan’s Chinatown. When she falls in love with her likely next target, Violet, she finds herself at the center of a true horror story and will be confronted with questions about her own identity and dark past.

It sounds like an incredible story. I had never heard of Carmilla before, but she seems like an incredible antagonist to focus on. Chu said: “Everyone knows Dracula, but few know that he was inspired by the vampire Carmilla who fell in love with the many young women who became his victims … … Bringing history to 1990s New York has me allowed to explore the themes of identity culture, gentrification, homophobia and racism. It is certainly the darkest and most mature storyline I have ever written! ” With Lee adding, “Goth, horror and vampires form the classic backdrop of 90s New York … … Using the city’s colorful vibe and cultural references, Amy and I bring back to life an old New York I know. and I love in this reimagining of Carmilla. It seems the two worked really well together and it’s hard not to get involved in a project when it’s obvious how much the creators loved working on it. I’ll definitely check it out when it hits comic stores. January 11, 2023 and in bookstores January 24, 2023. It is now available for pre-order on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, your local comic store and your local bookstore.
