Cosplay universe is a new documentary by the directors Jonathan McHugh And Giordano Renner that explores the diverse and unique world of cosplay. Hoping to shed light on an often misunderstood art form, the film will present the international stories of Yaya Han, Kamui cosplay, Shema And Juan of the Mexican Cosplay Team TWIN Cosplay, organizer and academic of the World Cosplay Summit Ed Hoff, Lauren of the Corsetry of the Castle, Cinzia Tyler, Tommaso De Petrillo And Qi Ma. There will also be one of the latest interviews released by the late Stan Lee In the foreground. It took 6 years of pre-pandemic shooting at conventions in the United States to take an in-depth look at the subculture and unearth the complexities of the community.
“While those outside the Cosplay community may see Cosplay as a ‘disguise’, Cosplay has become so much more,” shares co-director Jonathan McHugh. “Encourages self-expression in a unique and inspiring way. It also allows people to have a creative way to discover parts of their identity they were not aware of before. ” Adds Rennert, “We made this film as a tool for cosplayers to help their friends and family understand what their love and this art form is all about.”
It sounds like a really interesting documentary. Personally I’ve never come close to cosplaying, but it’s an art form that I’m glad it exists because there have been some great character cosplay that I never thought people could bring to life. The film will premiere this July at Anime Expo, followed by a global theatrical release this summer. You can find theater tickets and information here.
