When The Fantastic Four: First Steps In the end he brought Galactus to the Marvel film universe, the fans were enthusiastic to see that he seemed exactly as we imagined and torn directly from the comics pages.
Thanks to the new concept art revealed by Ryan MeinerdingHead of Visual Development of the film, now we know that this accurate comedian aspect has been cooked in design from the beginning.
In an interview with Variety, Meinerding opened his job by giving life to the devourer of the worlds and to the way the legendary Jack Kirby projects were at the creative process.
“There was a lot of work on Galactus, trying to understand the appropriate staircase and how it will be experienced for the first time, and we made key frames that surrounded him. But Galactus was a complete joy to work on.”
The galactus scale was clearly a challenge, not only in terms of size but in capturing that intimidating and otherworld presence.
“It was demanding to try to get many details. It had to be one of those cosmic characters that you almost can’t fully appreciate how big it is. We also remained close to Kirby’s design.
“So I would say that from the drawings I worked, Galactus and the thing are probably two of the most inspired characters to Kirby I have ever been able to work.”
This type of love and loyalty to Kirby’s iconic style is what he did Fantastic Four: first steps feel so damn special. The film gave us that greatest sense of the life of reverential fear and wonder that made timeless comics. You may feel the cosmic beauty, the pure magic of science fiction and the bold visual narration that Kirby has poured into every panel.
See Galactus revealed in this way solidifies how much care has been put to do it well. From the beginning, Marvel knew what fans wanted and have delivered something that honors the past and brings that epic energy to a new generation.
