Dragon house showrunner Condal Ryan finally faced the blog post now canceled in which George RR Martin He publicly criticized the series and the point feedback is clear.
Martin’s post, entitled “Pay attention to the butterflies”, briefly lived on his not a blog last September before vanishing. But not before the fans copied, archive and mark.
In it, Martin has questioned the creative freedoms that the show had taken, in particular the accumulation of apparently minor changes that, in his opinion, have made themselves until stiff in something bigger, something emotionally false in the story he wrote.
Among his complaints there was the exclusion of Prince Maelor Targaryen during the brutal sequence of “Blood & Cheese”, who claimed that basically altered the trajectory of the Helaena arch.
The Condal, who had not seen the post before it was removed, replied in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, saying that the whole situation was frustrating, especially from someone to whom he looked for for decades.
“He was disappointing,” said Condal in no uncertain terms. “I will simply say that I have been a fan of an ice and fire song for almost 25 years and working on the show was really one of the great privileges of, not only my career as a writer, but my life as a fan of science fiction and fantasy.
“George himself is a monument, a literary icon as well as a personal hero of mine, and was strongly influential on me on the way as a writer.”
That admiration has not disappeared, but it is clear that there has been a disconnection between the two on how to adapt Fire and bloodA pseudo-historical text full of unreliable narrators, in a serialized drama that needs definitive characters, choices and timing.
According to the Condal, Martin has not been completely open to the constraints that derive from transforming that world into a TV series.
“I made every effort to include George in the adaptation process,” continued the Condal. “I really did it. Over the years and years. And we appreciated a very mutually fruitful collaboration, I thought, really strong for a long time.
“But at a certain point, when we became deeper along the way, it did not become reluctant to recognize the practical issues at hand in a reasonable way. And I think as a showrunner, I have to keep my practical hat producer and my creative writer, the lover hat of the material.
There is also the vast staircase and the complexity of the modern television production to consider, which is something that the conduct must juggle in such a way as to honor Martin’s vision.
“In the end, I only have to continue to march not only the forward writing process, but also the practical parts of the forward process for the good of the crew, the cast and for HBO, because it is my work”, continued the condal.
“So I can only hope that George and I can rediscover that harmony one day. But that’s what I have to say about it.”
As for the change of Maelor Targaryen? The conductor is waiting for the decision and insists that it has not been made lightly.
“There is nothing we do on the show without talking about it and thinking about it very deeply for many months, if not years,” he said.
“I will only say that the creative decisions we make in the show all flow through me, each of them, and this is the show I want to do and believe, as a fan of Fire and blood And a deep reader of this material is the adaptation that we should do not only to serve Fire and bloodBut also a huge television audience. “
Season 3 of House of the Dragon is already in production, with a premiere probably in 2026.
In the meantime, HBO will extend A knight of the seven kingdoms By the end of the year, continuing to expand Westeros on the screen.
