Cineverse has announced that Troma Entertainment’s reimagining of the 1984 Cull Classic The toxic avengerwill finally hit theaters this year, in 2025.
The film had a long road to getting a release as it was previously reported that the film is unreliable. It has been explained that the film’s commercial prospects are too “out there” for any kind of traditional theatrical release.
The film was directed by Macon Blair (I no longer feel at home in this world), and interprets Peter Dinklage Like toxie.
The director shared a statement: “I am beyond thrilled the team behind Toxic Avenger was so supportive and steadfast as we searched for the perfect distribution partner for our film.
“It’s so good that people will have a chance to see it in theaters, it’s a fun movie that you want to see with a crowd. Mutant Hero smashes bad guys with a MOP – perfect entertainment for the whole family!
“Our goal was always to preserve the heart and spirit of the original toxie (which had been seared into my brain at an early age) and try to do something that Troma fans would dig and at the same time do something with the character that feels fresh.
“Lloyd and Michael from Troma were a blast to work with, absolutely everyone at Legendary is a star, and I can’t wait to start working with the Champs at Cinverse to bring this version of Txie to fans new and old.”
The film is described as a brand new reinvention of Lloyd KaufmanIt’s classic The toxic avenger,“And it is explained that” while the original film (premiered in 1984 – almost 40 years ago!) followed the fate of Melvin Ferd Junko III (Mitch Cohen), who goes from zero to toxic hero in a case of bullying gone wrong, Macon BlairThe contemporary take follows a horribly deformed creature of superhuman size and strength. “
Dinklage stars as “Winston Gooze’s pantry janitor who, after falling into a vat of toxic waste, becomes none other than the toxic avenger. This timely reimagining hinges his eyeballs on environmental themes as Winston clashes with the evil forces of greed and corruption to save his son, his friends and his community.”
The synopsis also notes: “Though this story exists on its own terms, Spirit undoubtedly remains connected to the original. Troma fans old and new will be pleased to know that the film has been rated “R” for Violence and Gore – in Troma tradition.”
Dinklage previously spoke about the film saying, “I want it to get out into the world because it was a really big hit at Fantastic Fest in Austin, and Macon Blair, the writer/director who’s also in the grove… He’s amazing. He’s one of my favorite people and favorite artists. So I hope he will have his day in the toxic sun.”
When previously teasing the violence in the film, the director said that it would include “Itchy & Scratchy-Type Violence”, which is obviously in reference to The Simpsons‘Elevated CAT-VS mouse comic sketches.
He explained: “We have a guy who stuffs his head into a car engine and kind of grinds his head. That was a gag I was fond of. “
While making the film, the director explained that he thought the studio wouldn’t go along with his ideas: “I kept expecting legend to say, ‘This is not what we want,’ but they kept agreeing to the things I launched”.
Blair adds that when making the film, he “embraced the silliness and rubbish, while still wanting it to be a fun, feel-good, rock’n’roll fun time.”
The film also stars Elijah Wood, Julia Davis, Taylor Paige, Kevin BaconAND Jacob Tremblay. Great to hear the movie is being released and I can’t wait to see it!
