Dave Filoni’s STAR WARS movie will become a series if THE MANDALORIAN & GROGU fails

Lucasfilm has big and ambitious plans for the interconnected Star Wars narrative that unfolds through The Mandalorian, Ahsokaand the other spin-off series.

In 2023, the studio announced that Dave Filoni would direct a feature film to conclude this New Republic story arc. But according to industry experts, this epic conclusion could turn into a movie in a series, depending on how Jon Favreau’S The Mandalorian and Grogu performs at the box office.

Industry scoop Daniel Richtman recently said that Lucasfilm may alter its approach based on the film’s financial success.

He said, “If the Mando movie fails, they will reconsider their plans and turn the crossover movie into a miniseries.” He also noted, “Lucasfilm will reportedly play it safe with its shows moving forward, whatever that means.”

The untitled crossover project is set in the New Republic era, focusing on the growing conflict between the Imperial Remnant and the newly formed New Republic.

This plot will connect the threads introduced in The Mandalorian AND Ahsokamaking it a culminating chapter in the ongoing saga.

As of now, Filoni is currently focused on developing Ahsoka season 2, and speaking about it previously, he said:

“I’m very comfortable with that, too. I’m writing it, and I’m still the only writer on it, and so I’ve had fun doing it, but it’s a challenge, obviously, and working on some of these story arcs has been a challenge and making sure that everything came out in a way that I think is exciting for the fans.

Filoni continued: “I know they’re interested in knowing where some of the things I developed in the first season. I’m quite happy with it. I love working with Rosario.” [Dawson]so I can’t wait to get back to it.”

When it comes to The Manadlorian & Grogu film, Filoni said, “I’m very excited, too. Jon and I had a great time working on it, as we always do.

“It was great to see Grogu. He’s become a star, and it’s amazing how he’s evolved, what we can do now with the puppets compared to the first season and where we are today in a film working with the team that I’ve worked with them quite a bit on the puppets.”

“The Legacy Effects did a fantastic job, and what a wonderful little creation Grogu is.”

The Mandalorian and Grogu will hit theaters on May 22, 2026, and I hope it ends up being a box office success so that Filoni can make his own Star Wars movie. The creative team just needs to make a great Star Wars movie!
