Scientists have discovered and described a giant bear, previously unknown to science, that lived on the territory of the modern Stavropol Territory several million years ago. Alexey Lopatin, Director of the Borisyak Institute of Paleontology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told RIA Novosti.
As Alexey Lopatin noted, it was he who described the new genre. According to the scientist, this predator belonged to a group of extinct giant bears that were related to modern giant pandas.
The bear was named Huracan Borisyak in honor of the first director of the Institute of Paleontology, Academician Alexey Alekseevich Borisyak.
The scientist also said that this bear was large even by the standards of its group, approaching the maximum size among its relatives. “Like all huracans, it was a large, active predator that could run fast,” Lopatin added.
It is known that the study is based on the analysis of remains that are approximately six million years old. It is reported that only one individual of the Borisyak huracan is currently known, discovered in Russia.
“Ancient bears have been studied far from comprehensively, so new species will continue to be found in different countries of the world, including Russia,” Lopatin said.
Meanwhile, paleontologists have previously presented new evidence disproving the theory that dinosaurs went extinct before an asteroid hit 66 million years ago.
