Quentin Tarantino is a fan of Todd Phillips Joker: Folie a Deuxand when he explained why he liked the film so much, he was met with a lot of reactions from fans who didn’t like the film.
The director was recently a guest on The Joe Rogan Experience, and it was there that he shouted out and responded to some fans who railed against his opinion.
He said: “I go to a show and say I like it Joker 2. Now there are 150 articles about it. One person hears about it and writes an article about it and there are 150 scam articles about it.
“And then you read the comments: ‘Quentin is a damn asshole. That movie fucking sucks. He’s a damn asshole for saying something like that.’ Why am I a damn asshole? I fucking loved the movie! Does this make me a damn asshole? You either like the film or you don’t.
“I’m not advertising the film. I’m not doing anything. I’m just saying I like it. Who cares what I like? What do you care what the fuck I like?”
“Then they say I’m a damn asshole for not seeing something. What the fuck do you care what I see or don’t see? Some people will say, “Well, I think he’s missing something.” Well, I’m sure there’s a lot of things I could say you’re missing and I don’t care if you miss something.
In case you need a refresher on what Tarantino said, he shared: “I really, really liked it. Very. Truly, tremendously, and I went to see it expecting to be impressed by the making of the film.
“But I thought it would be an intellectual exercise at a distance, that in the end I wouldn’t think it worked as a film, but that I would appreciate it for what it is. And I’m nihilistic enough to enjoy a movie that doesn’t work like a movie or is like a big, giant mess to some degree.
“And I didn’t find it an intellectual exercise. I was really involved in it. I really liked the musical sequences. I’m really into it. I thought the more banal the songs, the better. I find myself listening to the lyrics of ‘For Once in My Life’ like I never have before.”
Speaking about Phoenix’s performance, he said that the actor gives “one of the best performances I’ve ever seen in my life in this movie”.
Then he says the movie is a big F-you to comic book geeks: “The Joker directed the movie. The whole concept, even him spending the studio’s money – he’s spending it like the Joker would spend it, okay?
“And then his big surprise gift – haha! – the jack-in-the-box, when he offers you his hand for a handshake and you get a 10,000 volt buzzer blasting you – they’re the comic book geeks.
“He’s telling all of them fuck off. He’s saying “fuck you” to the movie audience. He’s saying “fuck Hollywood.” He’s saying “fuck you” to anyone who owns shares of DC and Warner Brothers […] And Todd Phillips is the Joker. A Joker movie, okay, that’s what it is. He’s the Joker.”
It’s silly when people attack others based on their opinion of something. Everyone is different, everyone has different tastes. It’s okay to have different opinions! Makes it fun to talk to people!
