The director of WOLF MAN explains how the film is inspired by THE FLY and THE SHINING

Universal Pictures is coming The Wolf Man it looks like the film will offer a very different take on the werewolf horror genre.

As we’ve seen in the trailers that have been released, the film will feature some pretty nightmarish body horror as we watch it. Christopher Abbott’s the character transforms into a werewolf creature.

It turns out that this transformation was heavily influenced by the classic horror film, The Moscow. During a recent interview with Empire, the director Leigh Whannell explains it The Wolf Man will lean on the body-horror elements inherent to the myth of werewolves.

He said, “What The Moscow what many other practical effects-based horror films of that period didn’t do was bring out the tragedy from these practical effects.

“It wasn’t a joke The Moscow. He was there to illustrate someone who was dying of illness. I thought, “I have to do this.” It’s not about being funny, disgusting or gory. It’s about the tragedy of the human body falling apart.”

It certainly seems like the director brings that horrible energy The Wolf Man. This tragedy that Whannell speaks of will be witnessed by his wife Charlotte (Giulia Garner) and their daughter Ginger (Matilde Firth).

When talking about Garner’s performance, the director compares it to Shelley Duvall In The Shining One. He said: “She will be the emotional compass of this film, and she will be what Shelley Duvall was in The Shining.

“Don’t be scared The Shining One without Shelley Duvall. And so I thought, ‘I have to find someone who can absorb the empathy of the audience.’ And he did an incredible job.”

These comments make me even more excited to watch this movie!

Abbott (Poor things, it arrives at night) plays Blake, a husband and father from San Francisco, “who inherits his remote childhood home in rural Oregon after his father disappears and is presumed dead.

“With his marriage to his powerful wife, Charlotte (Giulia Garner; Ozark, Inventing Anna), worn out, Blake convinces Charlotte to take a break from the city and visit the property with their young daughter, Ginger (Matlida Firth; Hullraisers, Coma).

“But as the family approaches the farm in the dead of night, they are attacked by an unseen animal and, in a desperate escape, they barricade themselves inside the house as the creature prowls the perimeter.

“As the night progresses, however, Blake begins to act strangely, transforming into something unrecognizable, and Charlotte will be forced to decide whether the terror inside their home is deadlier than the danger outside.”

The film is scheduled for release in January 2025.
