Robert Zemeckis Says Studio Still Asks for BACK TO THE FUTURE 4 But Would Rather Direct Musical Adaptation

Director Roberto Zemeckis confirmed during an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that Universal Pictures often contacts him to see if he would be interested in making a fourth Back to the future movie.

His answer remains “no”, although he would be interested in developing a film adaptation Back to the Future: The Musicalwhich recently announced that it will play its final performance on Broadway on January 5, 2025.

When asked on the podcast if Universal begs him “every two years” for Back to the Future 4Zemeckis joked, “Oh, every six months.” He later clarified that it was “just an exaggeration”, but said that Universal often contacts him about another sequel.

Zemeckis jokingly mimicked the study, saying, “’Isn’t there anything we can figure out to do here? Is there nothing we can do?’” He continued:

“You know, we have to say, ‘There are several things that might work.’ Something like that, you know? But remaking the movie or suggesting that there is a… Back to the Future 4it’s just not in the cards.

“I would like to do the Back to the Future: The Musical [movie]. I’d like to do it. I think it would be great. I brought this up to the guys at Universal. They don’t understand. AS, [there’s] nothing I can do.

Back to the Future: The Musical debuted on Broadway in August 2023 following its debut in London’s West End, where it won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical in 2022.

The show will close on Broadway after more than 500 performances and $80 million worth of tickets sold, producers said.

With regard to Back to the Future 4said original franchise star Michael J. Fox Variety last year that there was no need for a fourth film or a reboot, although he added wryly: “Do what you want. It’s your movie. I’ve already been paid.”

Fox added: “I don’t think it’s necessary. I think [Zemeckis has] was really smart about it. I don’t think it’s necessary to restart it because you will clarify something? Will you find a better way to tell the story? I doubt it.”

Fox co-star Christopher Lloyd, who played mad scientist Emmett “Doc” Brown, is more open to the idea of Back to the Future 4.

“I would love to do a sequel, but I think Bob Zemeckis and [producer Steven] Spielberg felt the story was told in three episodes. But if someone had a brilliant idea that justified a fourth film, it could happen.”
