It was announced earlier this year Josh Gad is working on the screenplay for the sequel to Spaceballs with writers Benji Samit AND Dan Hernandez (Detective Pikachu).
Gad is also producing the film along with the director Josh Greenbaum and creator Mel Brooksand recently finished the first draft of the screenplay.
During an interview with Forbes, Gad talked about the script and said that everyone who read it was blown away by it.
He said: “Without MGM taking me to the Culver prison cells, I can tell you the draft is over. Everyone who read it was amazed. Working on this project with and alongside Mel Brooks was one of the highlights of my career.”
Gad goes on to say that the whole experience was “kind of a fever dream” and said that Brooks “was so incredibly supportive and engaged and thrilled by this because he’s the one who surprisingly got away with it.”
He added: “It’s a dream to finally realize the reality that Yogurt prophesied in the first film. I can’t say anything else.
“I can’t tell you anything beyond that [the] process at this point, but I can tell you that every hour of every day right now is spent making this project closer and closer to reality – and I think we’re getting closer to the end zone here.
Gad previously spoke about the script, saying it’s “the funniest and best thing [he’s] ever worked.”
The original science fiction from 1987 Star Wars the comedy parody follows the adventures of Lone Starr (Bill Pullmann) and his assistant Barf (Giovanni Caramella), a half-man, half-dog creature, as they try to save Princess Vespa (Dafne Zuniga) from the evil clutches of Dark Helmet (Moranis) and President Skroob (Brooks).
In their quest, they receive guidance from the wise and powerful Yogurt, who introduces them to “The Schwartz”, a mystical power.
I’m excited to see how it turns out!
