Warner Bros. is preparing to bring one of TV’s most iconic futuristic families to life Jim Carrey it might just lead the way. According to Deadline, Carrey is in talks to star in the studio’s live-action adaptation The Jetsonswith Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World, The Book of Henry) walking around the director’s chair.
Trevorrow will also co-write the screenplay Joe Epsteindeveloping a new interpretation of the classic Hanna-Barbera film that first appeared on television screens in 1962.
The original animated series, produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions, aired on ABC from September 23, 1962 to March 17, 1963. It followed George Jetson, a troubled corporate father navigating a high-tech utopia filled with flying cars, robot maids, and elevated homes.
Together with his wife Jane, teenage daughter Judy, young son Elroy and ever-faithful Rosie the robot, George has tried to balance work and family life under the watchful eye of his demanding boss, Mr. Spacely.
The show was rebooted in 1985 and also made it to the big screen with a 1990 animated film that grossed just over $20 million domestically.
Warner Bros. has already had success translating Hanna-Barbera classics into live-action. Their 2002 adaptation of Scooby-Doo directed by Raja Gosnell and written by James Gunn became a box office success, grossing nearly half a billion dollars worldwide alongside its 2004 sequel Scooby-Doo: Monsters Unleashed.
Although Warner Bros. declined to comment on the project, Carrey appears to be a perfect fit for this project. It’s not hard to imagine him as George Jetson.
The actor dominated the box office throughout the ’90s and recently found a new groove in franchise roles, such as Dr. Ivo Robotnik in the Paramount film Sonic the Hedgehogwhere he had a lot of fun.
If Carrey were to officially sign on, his signature blend of physical comedy and manic charm could be a perfect match for the retro-futuristic world of The Jetsons. What do you think!?
