The Duffer brothers are preparing to reveal to the world the conclusion of their five-season passion project, Stranger thingswhich has immediately captivated fans since the first season debuted in 2016.
In a recent interview with Variety, the creators were quick to assure fans that this final season will perfectly wrap up the show’s massive storyline in a way that will please its devoted fans, and teased the spinoff, which has been kept heavily under wraps.
Matt Duffer explained that he and his brother Ross have no desire to “expand further and further into what could become an insanely convoluted mythology” after season five.
Instead another one Stranger things the show, Ross says, “will live in a slightly different world,” but “there will be connective tissue.”
Yes, they imagine that world, but no, they still don’t tell anyone, including their closest collaborators.
“They have been very protective of spinoff talk and I understand that the Matt-Ross bubble is sacred,” the producer/director said. Shawn Levy he says. “I’m excited to extend the narrative life of ‘Stranger Things’ — I won’t call it a ‘universe,’ because that would be obnoxious.” He pauses. “The ‘STU’? Too soon? Shit, I know you’re going to use it!”
Despite the wait, however, “Netflix has been surprisingly patient,” says Matt. “I feel like patience is wearing a little thin, with the show coming to an end. But they’re understanding.”
(After asking what the Duffers said Variety regarding the spin-off, Netflix creative director Bela Bajaria says there is no set timeline. “I would always like ‘Stranger Things’ more,” he says, laughing. “When they’re ready, we’ll be ready.”)
For now, I’m just excited to see how the flagship series ends. Then I can focus on what else might exist in the Stranger Things universe…
