With Alien: Romulus being a huge success for Disney and 20th Century Studios, it stands to reason that they will eventually move forward with a sequel with the director Fede Alvarez.
Well, we have an update on the current status of the sequel from 20th Century Studios’ top production executive Steve Asbell.
During a recent interview with THR, he said, “We’re working on a sequel idea now. We haven’t finalized our deal with Fede yet. [Alvarez]but we’re going to do it and he’s got an idea we’re working on.”
He went on to say that the two main characters, who survived the first film, will be part of the next story. “The two survivors, Rain and Andy, played by Cailee Spaeny AND David Jonssonwere the real highlights of the film.
“And so I’m always thinking about, ‘Wow, where do people want to see them go next?’ We know there will be aliens. We know there will be great horror scenes. But I fell in love with both of them and I want to see what their story is.”
Director Fede Alvarez revealed that he and co-writer Rodo Sayagues (evil Dead) already have some ideas in place for the sequel.
In Alien: Romulus“While searching the depths of an abandoned space station, a group of young space colonists come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.”
Speaking previously about the possibility of a sequel, Alvarez said: “Yes, I absolutely can [pitch a sequel right now]. We tend to do it naturally, without even thinking about sequels.
“For us, films have not become franchises, tentpoles and sequels. This is a language I only learned in the last ten years of my working life [in Hollywood]. For me it has always been a question of history.”
He continued to tease where the story might go: “So once it was over, we started thinking, ‘What do you think will happen when or if they get to Yvaga? Will it be great? Or is it a terrible place?’
“We tend to believe that it’s probably a terrible place that they think is great and fantasize about, so we naturally started thinking about where it goes and what’s going to happen.
“And then, after a few minutes, we say, ‘Oh, this feels like a sequel.’ But we really try to think about it more in terms of the story, whether it needs another chapter and whether people want to know what happens next.
“So we’ll wait to see what people think and if people ask for it. My philosophy is that you should never do that [a sequel] in two years. You have to go away. You have to convince the audience to actually want it.
“If you think about it Alien AND Aliensthere are seven years between them. But we definitely have ideas about where it should go.”
It will be cool to see what he and his creative team end up telling the story next. I have no doubt that he will once again deliver something fantastic.
