Warner Bros. is betting big on the future of set stories JRR TolkienIt’s Middle Earth. They’ve already announced a new live-action movie with The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollumwhich is directed by Andy Serkis.
Not long after the announcement, Ian McKellen he said it would be two films, but that’s actually not the case.
The Lord of the Rings screenwriter Filippa Boyens confirmed it The Hunt for Gollum will only be one film, but it also reveals that there is a separate film in development as well.
When asked if The Hunt for Gollum would be two films, Boyens replied: “I can tell you for sure that it won’t be two films!
“It was a real misunderstanding because we started working, conceptually, on two different live-action films. The first being The Hunt for Gollumthe second still to be confirmed.”
Boyens then revealed new details about the story and promised The Hunt for Gollum it would be a compelling tale, saying:
“It’s a pretty intense story, taking place after Bilbo’s birthday party and before the Mines of Moria. It’s a specific part of an incredible untold story, told through the perspective of this incredible creature.”
It will be an interesting story to watch unfold!
Peter Jackson is producing the film together with its partners Fran Walsh AND Filippa Boyens with whom he will write the screenplay Phoebe Gittins AND Arty Papageorgiou.
A variety of Middle-earth films will “explore plots yet to be told” and this film in particular will obviously focus on Gollum. As you can imagine, there are some familiar faces that could appear in the film, and one of the most notable ones is Gandalf.
During a previous interview, Jackson talked about the story they’re trying to tell while offering some insight into why they wanted to tell this tragic Gollum story.
Jackson explained: “The character of Gollum/Sméagol has always fascinated me because Gollum reflects the worst of human nature, while his Sméagol side is, without a doubt, quite sympathetic.
“I think it resonates with both readers and movie audiences, because there’s a little bit of both in all of us. We really want to explore his past and delve into those parts of his journey that we haven’t had time to cover in the previous films.
“It’s too early to know who will cross his path, but suffice it to say, we’ll be taking a cue from Professor Tolkien.”
It will be nice to see what these futures will look like The Lord of the Rings movies come out.
