James Gunn says David Corenswet will “blow people’s minds” as Superman

James Gunn recently talked about his upcoming one Superman movie and how fans will love what David Corenswet AND Rachel Brosnahan lead to Superman and Lois Lane in the film. In particular he exalts Corenswet, saying:

“The film is doing extraordinarily well. We are in the editing phase. David Corenswet will blow people’s minds.

“He’s the movie star that everyone dreams he can be. And I don’t think anyone really understands the depth of this guy’s talent, dramatically, comedically, he’s the best physical action star I’ve probably ever worked with .

“He is an amazing actor and Rachel Brosnahan, people will die for her too.”

Well, I hope he’s right! I’ve watched a couple of scenes with Corenswet since he was cast as Superman, the most recent film being Twisterbut it was rather one-dimensional and monotonous at that. But Gunn obviously got a much better performance out of him for Superman.

Superman will tell the story of “Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas.

“He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

We’ve also heard that the film is “a complete move into hardcore science fiction and fantasy, the exact opposite of Man of Steel.

“It’s set in a world very different from ours and very far from the DCEU. Heroes have been around for centuries and we’ll see how that has influenced the history of this world and shaped the DCU.”

Superman stars Nicola Hoult as Lex Luthor; Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern; Isabela Mercede as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt/Mr. Terrific; Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen; María Gabriela de Faría in the role of Angela Spica, aka The Engineer; Sara Sampaioas Eva Teschmacher; AND Terence Rosemore as Otis.

Superman will launch the cinematic portion of DC Studios’ Gods and Monsters: Part 1. The theatrical release is scheduled for July 11, 2025.
