Mattel is developing a live-action VIEW-MASTER film

Yes, it’s happening, the Mattel toy company behind Barbie and Hot Wheels, is developing a live-action movie based on the View-Master stereoscopic imaging device.

The film project is set up at Sony Pictures with Escape Artists producing. The View-Master was released in 1939, and Mattel described the toy as a “popular childhood staple for generations.”

The toy has “taken its fans around the world with its 3D image reels, creating worlds of imagination and storytelling for every adventure-seeker.”

There are no plot details, but Robbie Brenner, president of Mattel Films, said in a statement: “View-Master has inspired generations to embark on boundless adventures, offering a treasure trove of narrative possibilities for this film.

“We are thrilled to work with Sony Pictures Entertainment and Todd Black at Escape Artists to bring this Mattel franchise to life. Their creative and cinematic experience lays the foundation for presenting a modern version of this beloved toy to audiences around the world.

Escape Artists’ Black added: “View-Master has long been a window into the wonders of the world, sparking imaginations in both children and adults.

“Collaborating with Robbie Brenner and Mattel Films gives us the chance to honor this legacy while creating an entirely new adventure for today’s audiences. We can’t wait to bring the sense of exploration of this precious toy to the big screen.”

I can imagine it as a fun horror movie, but I doubt Mattel will take it in that direction. What would your proposal be for a View-Master film?

Mattel is currently developing a series of films based on its toy portfolio. These projects include American Girl, Barney, Vin Diesel’s “Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robot” and the card game Uno with rapper Lil Yachty.
