Sydney Sweeney is currently filming his next film project, a boxing biopic that will tell the story of a pioneering boxer Christ Martin.
When the movie was first announced, I remember thinking that Sweeney didn’t have the build of a boxer and I wasn’t sure how he would pull it off. Well, the actress released a couple of behind-the-scenes photos and damn… did she gain weight!
Sweeney shows off his muscular arms in the photos and proved me wrong. It’s not hard to see her as a boxer now!
The as-yet-untitled film “will tell the true story of Martin’s rise to become America’s most famous boxer in the 1990s: the ‘female Rocky.’
“A naturally gifted fighter, her life transformed in 1989 when she met her manager, and then husband, Jim Martin. Breaking boundaries, she became the first woman to sign with iconic promoter Don King and the only female boxer to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
“Her charisma, good looks and resilience in the ring have earned her a passionate fan base and inspired her to become welterweight champion. But behind the well-defined public persona, she faced personal demons, toxic relationships and a brutal attempt on her life.
Sweeney said in an earlier statement: “I wrestled and kickedboxed from the ages of 12 to 19. I couldn’t wait to get back in the ring, train and transform my body. Christy’s story is not light, it is physically and emotionally demanding, there is a lot of weight to carry. But I love challenging myself.”
She continued: “Christy Martin not only legitimized women’s boxing, she overcame gender stereotypes and fought emotional, physical and financial abuse.
“I am passionate about the world of fighting, Christy’s story sheds light on her incredible rise to the top while showcasing the struggles for fame behind the scenes. I feel compelled to tell the story of a woman who faced so much adversity and didn’t let it defeat her. It’s powerful and emotional.
The film was directed by David Michodwho added: “I have a history of making films about damaged men and I wanted to make a film about a woman with a fierce energy within her.
“When I came across Christy Martin’s story two years ago I knew I had found it. Her ferocity is understandable and justifiable, and audiences will desire her because of the circumstances she was forced to endure.”
He continued, “The film is about Christy as a young gay woman in a small town in West Virginia in the 1990s. She came from a relatively conservative family and wasn’t allowed to be who she was, so she used boxing as a vehicle to express herself and her anger.
“She had to make dangerous and fundamental compromises in her life, the most important of which was marrying an incredibly dangerous man.”
Michôd added: “Sydney’s performance in Reality blew me away. She has been fiercely sporty since she was a child and has a taste for fighting games.
