Netflix has released a trailer for their documentary The Menendez brothers. This is not to be confused with the Ryan Murphy-created the season of his anthology series Monsterwhich debuted last week on the same streamer, with the actors telling the story.
This is a documentary that features the lawyers involved in the case on both sides, family members, journalists, as well as Lyle and Erik themselves.
The paper is directed by Alexander Hartmann (Carmel: Who killed Maria Marta?, The photographer: murder in Pinamar), and is produced by Ross M. Dinerstein and Rebecca Evans, with Ross Girard and Mark McCune as executive producers.
The synopsis reads: “In 1996, Lyle and Erik Menendez were convicted of the murder of their parents in what became one of the most notorious criminal cases of the late 20th century.
“For the first time in 30 years, and in their own words, both brothers relive the trial that shocked the nation. Through extensive audio interviews with Lyle and Erik, the lawyers involved in the trial, the journalists who covered it, the jurors, the family and other informed observers.
“Acclaimed Argentine filmmaker Alejandro Hartmann offers new insights and a new perspective on a case that people only think they know.”
It actually looks really fascinating. Now I can appreciate the nuances of true crime, but having grown up in Southern California at the time of these murders and the trial, I was just angry that the non-stop coverage my parents were consuming was interrupting my TV time after the school, which probably consisted of Saved by the bell AND Flower repeats itself.
Check out the trailer below and watch The Menendez brothers documentary when it debuts on Netflix on October 7.
