THE RINGS OF POWER Showrunner Talks Dark Wizard and His Role in Season 2

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power In the second season, new threats loom in the East of Middle-earth: one of these is the Dark Lord Sauron and the other is the Dark Wizard, who is accumulating power in the realm of Rhûn.

We’ve seen a few scenes of Ciarán Hinds as the Dark Wizard in the series, but we don’t yet know what role he’ll play in the story. However, showrunner Patrick McKay teased the villain’s character in a recent interview with CB.

Speaking about the Dark Wizard’s role in the series, McKay said: “I don’t know if it’s such a new concept. We’ve seen throughout Tolkien that powerful beings are tempted by evil.

“Gandalf will not carry the Ring because he fears the harm it might do through him. Saruman turns to evil believing it is the best way to save the world, in whatever twisted logic he can think of.

“We know that good characters can turn bad and we know that even wizards can go to the dark side, so to speak, and to see how that plays out with Ciarán Hinds will hopefully be a real thrill for people.”

McKay compares the Dark Wizard to Gandalf (who many fans believe is the Stranger) and Saruman, who allies himself with Sauron during the War of the Ring in the Third Age.

Some fans speculate that the Dark Wizard could turn out to be Saruman in the Second Age, but we’ll just have to wait and see how his story arc develops.

The series is set “thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’S The Hobbit AND The Lord of the Ringsand will take viewers back to a time when great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the thinnest thread, and the greatest villain Tolkien had ever created threatened to plunge the entire world into darkness.

“Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows a cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared resurgence of evil in Middle-earth.

“From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the Elven capital of Lindon, to the extraordinary island kingdom of Númenor, to the farthest corners of the map, these kingdoms and characters will leave a legacy that will live on long after they are gone.”

In season two, Sauron has returned. Cast out by Galadriel, without an army or allies, the rising Dark Lord must now rely on his own cunning to rebuild his strength and oversee the creation of the Rings of Power, which will allow him to bind all the peoples of Middle-earth to his sinister will.

“Building on the epic scope and ambition of the first season, Amazon’s second season The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power immerses even its most beloved and vulnerable characters in a growing tide of darkness, challenging each of them to find their place in a world increasingly on the brink of destruction.

“Elves and dwarves, orcs and men, wizards and Harfoots… as friendships are tested and kingdoms begin to fracture, the forces of good fight ever more bravely to hold on to what matters most to them… themselves.”

The Rings of Power Season 2 will debut on Prime Video on August 29.
