THE Tron the universe is rekindling Tron: Aresand second Gillian Anderson AND Evan Petersthis new chapter finds the perfect balance between innovation and nostalgia.
Anderson tells GamesRadar+:
“A lot of that was in the writing and what Jared and Justin and Yokem envisioned for it, and I think they did a really great job of tying all the worlds together and making it feel like it was all new.
“But, at the same time, it taps into the elements that everyone just hopes will be there. There’s a lot of things that I think people will be very happy about.”
The story picks up decades after the events of Tron: Legacywith Greta Lee played by Eve Kim, the CEO of Kevin Flynn’s legendary tech company, ENCOM. His mission is to find the mysterious Permanence Code, a piece of programming that could allow digital creations to exist indefinitely in the real world.
In the Tron universe, digital constructs can normally only last 29 minutes before fading from existence. The permanence code could change everything, or destroy it.
Evan Peters steps into the role of Julian Dillinger, the original’s nephew Tron the bad Ed Dillinger, with Gillian Anderson as his mother, Elisabeth. Julian sets events in motion by unleashing a powerful military AI known as Ares, played by Jared Letoalongside her counterpart Athena, played by Jodie Turner-Smith.
When Eve comes too close to discovering the permanence code, Julian sends Ares after her, sparking a frenzied digital war that blurs the lines between the internet and reality.
Peters explains:
“[In the] in the second movie, the Dillingers are unveiling NCom12 and now Julian is unveiling this military AI, Ares. So it kind of kicks off the movie.
“But like you said, it was in the writing, and then in the relationship and dynamic of our characters – which was pretty fresh and new to the series. I was excited to come on board with this.”
Anderson adds that the production went to great lengths to make the world feel tangible.
“There are some great sequences, some great chase sequences, and obviously the combination of CG and practical sets doesn’t feel too digitized.
“It really feels like this world exists, which is hard to do. And it’s a race against time. I feel like it’s really a pressure cooker and a time bomb. It just moves.”
Directed by Joachim Rønning, Tron: Ares was written by Jesse Wigutowwho also worked Daredevil: Born Again. The cast includes Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, Sarah Desjardins, Jeff Bridgesand a cameo from Cameron Monaghan.
With its mix of badass graphics, realistic performances and a story that connects generations of Tron universe together, Tron: Ares moves the franchise forward in new and exciting ways.
