A24 has released the first trailer for Sebastian Stanthe next movie of A different manwhich is described as “a dizzying dark comedy.”
The film centers on Edward, an aspiring actor with neurofibromatosis, a genetic disease that causes skin and bone tumors.
Edward ends up undergoing facial reconstructive surgery, and is later praised for his new appearance by colleagues and others. But then he meets Oswald (Adam Pearson), an actor who plays him in a stage play based on his life.
Edward becomes obsessed with Oswald, who looked exactly like him before the operation.
Pearson is a real-life actor who suffers from neurofibromatosis and has starred in films such as Under the skin AND Chained for life.
The film’s synopsis reads: “Aspiring actor Edward undergoes a radical medical procedure to drastically transform his appearance. But his dreamy new face quickly turns into a nightmare as he becomes obsessed with regaining what was lost.”
The film was written and directed by Aaron Schimberg and Stan won the Best Actor Award at the Berlin Film Festival for his work in the film.
Stan spoke about the film, saying, “I interacted with people and it was really interesting. It was a little scary to see how limited the interaction is between two extremes: not dealing with it or overcompensating.
“The only people who were more honest were children. I had this interaction with a little girl, and her mother was trying to do the right thing, but in doing the right thing she was actually preventing the child from just having an experience.
“She was brave and courageous, and that’s true for kids, right? They just want to know, they don’t judge. It was a learning experience for me.”
The film is scheduled for release in theaters on September 20.
