Peacock has released a new trailer for the director Roland Emmerichthe next gladiator drama series Those who are about to dieThe show explores the corrupt world of spectacle-driven gladiatorial competitions.
It looks like a large scale series and the action and battle sequences set in the Colosseum look really cool. The series has a high production value.
The stars of the series Antonio Hopkins, Author atand the story dives into “a side of ancient Rome never told before: the dirty business of entertaining the masses, giving the crowd what it wants most… blood and sport.”
The series features “an ensemble of characters from all corners of the Roman Empire colliding at the explosive intersection of sports, politics and dynasties.”
Emmerich has previously spoken about the show, saying: “I’ve always been fascinated by the history of the Roman Empire. So much of it still seems relevant to our society today, from the intertwining of politics and sport to the disciplines of competition, which haven’t changed much in the last 2,000 years.”
He added: “The most thrilling spectacles for the masses are still those in which two men beat each other up in an arena, and today’s chariots are called racing cars and their drivers still crash into each other and often pay with their lives.”
The director spoke about his goal for the series, saying: “When my partners Gianni Nunnari and Harald Kloser put by Daniel Mannix Those who are about to die on my reading list, I was immediately fascinated by it.
“My goal was to create a show that explored a side of Rome that had never been told before: the dirty business of entertaining the masses, giving the crowd what they crave most… blood and sport. Let the games begin.”
Hopkins is joined in the series by Iwan Rheon (game of Thrones), Sarah Martini, Tom Hughes (A discovery of witches), Jojo Macario (Soft), Moe Hashim, Johannes Haukur Johannesson, Rupert Penry Jones, Penry Jones’ son, Gabriella Pesio, Dimitri Leonida, Emilio Sakraya, David Wurawa, Pepper Barroso, Gonzalo Almeida, Eneko SagardoyAND Romana Maggiora Vergano.
Emmerich directed five of the ten episodes in Those who are about to die with Marco Kreuzpaintner (Bodies, The Lazarus Project) directing the other five.
Peacock has confirmed that all ten episodes of Those who are about to die will debut on July 18th.
